Liam Nishizawa

Age 15

[April 6, 2004 - December 18, 2019]

Liam’s Legacy: A Life of Compassion, Creativity, and Connection

Liam Nishizawa was a remarkable young soul who brought light, warmth, and empathy to everyone he met. With an infectious energy and a smile that could brighten the darkest room, Liam embodied wisdom and emotional intelligence far beyond his 15 years. He had the rare ability to relate to people of all ages, offering kindness and understanding in ways that left a lasting impact.

Liam wasn’t just kind—he was exceptionally intelligent, consistently excelling in academics and earning glowing praise during parent-teacher interviews. Teachers often shared stories of how Liam had stepped in to help a peer, whether by supporting someone through their parents’ messy divorce or standing up against mistreatment. What stood out most was Liam’s quiet, impactful way of ensuring those who felt unseen or targeted knew they were valued, important, and—most of all—cared for.

In addition to his intellectual gifts, Liam was an athletic powerhouse. He had a unique ability to master any skill he set his mind to, paired with remarkable determination and dedication. Whether it was on the field, in the gym, or tackling a new physical challenge, Liam's talents shone brightly. But his athleticism was only part of his charm. Liam loved to dance, using his movements to bring laughter, get everyone off their feet, or seamlessly groove to any beat. His goofiness was woven into everything he did, from sports to everyday moments, adding joy and lightheartedness to the lives of those around him.

Liam also had a profound gift for humor and connection. He could transform even the most awkward or embarrassing moments into shared memories filled with laughter, creating bonds that turned potentially humiliating experiences into moments of joy and camaraderie. His humor and authenticity brought people together, and he never shied away from discussing difficult topics, handling them with openness and grace that inspired others to do the same.

Liam’s compassion extended into his community in countless ways. He sought opportunities to help those in need—whether it was feeding the homeless, supporting struggling families, donating his belongings, or volunteering wherever he could make a difference. His generosity and empathy were unmatched, and he never hesitated to act when he saw someone in need of support.

On December 18, 2019, Liam’s life was tragically cut short by suicide—a loss that left a deep and shaking impact on everyone who knew him. His family, friends, teammates, teachers, coaches, peers, and the entire community were left in shock and quiet disbelief. Liam, the most kind and inspiring young boy, who always shed light on the struggles of others, left a lasting impact with his passing. It served as a sobering reminder that we are all human and we all suffer. It is not something to be ashamed of or something to feel embarrassed about. Liam’s death opened the door for vital conversations, shifting perspectives on mental health and the challenges our youth face in an increasingly demanding world.

In just 15 years, Liam impacted more lives than most do in a lifetime. Though his physical presence is deeply missed, his light continues to shine through the lives he touched and the legacy he left behind. Through LowKure, his creativity, compassion, and unwavering mission to spread hope live on, inspiring others to carry forward his message of acceptance, courage, and mental health awareness.

IN HONOUR OF

Garbo + Liam: A Special Bond

Liam’s best friend wasn’t just a person—it was Garbo, his beloved dog. Their bond was unbreakable, full of laughter, love, and the kind of companionship only our pets can offer. Garbo was Liam’s inspiration, his light, and a driving force behind his dream of becoming a veterinarian. She brought endless energy, sweetness, and affection into his life, and he gave her the world in return.

When Liam passed, Garbo felt the loss just as deeply, waiting for her best friend every day until her final moment. For three more years, she lived her life with unwavering spirit, earning her own wheelchair, driver’s license, and the adoration of everyone who met her. She was a neighborhood treasure and a beacon of joy for all who knew her.

LEGACY SOWN INTO EVERY PIECE OF LOWKURE

Garbo’s memory is now immortalized on Liam’s website, standing proudly beside the clothing line that honors his creativity and legacy. She was there when LowKure began, gracing the first marketing campaigns with her warmth and charm. Today, we celebrate them both, forever together, in every piece of this collection.

This is more than a tribute—it’s a reminder of the unconditional love and resilience that Garbo and Liam shared.

Liam Nishizawa,

Liam was one of the first athletes I coached, but Liam will forever be more than an athlete to me.

To put a label on who Liam was as a person is a near-impossible task, but I would never shy away from an opportunity to talk about him. So, let’s do a little activity instead. I want you to list the top 10 traits you deem essential in a good person. Once you have those traits, amplify them to an infinite degree because Liam was someone who, without hesitation, embodied what you needed in any given moment—whether that be a workhorse, a friend, a best friend, someone’s brother, someone’s son, or any role imaginable. He always put others first. He always ensured that those around him never felt an ounce of sadness. Most importantly, he lived with a compassion that no one could ever replace.

Since Liam passed, I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on my favorite memory of him. To tell you the truth, I can’t pinpoint just one. Sure, there are moments that stand out—like the time he was sick and couldn’t compete in one of our tournaments but still made the trek to Red Deer to be a sideline hype man, even earning multiple warnings for cheering too enthusiastically. Or the time we went to IHOP, and he avoided biting into his chicken tenders in front of me because he knew I was a vegetarian. There are many moments, but to put it simply, my favorite memory of Liam is, in fact, the memory of him as a whole. Everything he did—every sarcastic comment, quirky action, or even just a facial expression—makes him someone I will truly never forget.

When Liam left, I caught a small glimpse of what it was like for him to live with such incredible stewardship. I saw the hole he left in his social circles, his teammates, and his family. For me, I lost more than an athlete. I lost someone who reminded me how great life could be. Whether in practice, on the court, or off it, Liam lived. He modeled compassion, he approached everything with enthusiasm, and he had the most infectious laugh.

So, Liam, thank you for coming into my life. You may not be on this Earth anymore, but you are with me in everything I do.

Liam was a person who brought light, love and inspiration to everyone he knew. Growing up with him from as little as grade one he was always the most caring person. No one was ever left out and he made sure of that. We were inseparable at such a young age. Everything we did, we did together, sharing so many adventures and laughs. One of many memories that always makes me smile happened in elementary. We had a nature table in one of our classes and of course we wanted to add to the collection. We went out one recess in winter and found what we thought were little acorns… stuffed our pockets full with them! We came back after the weekend and our teacher gave us a puzzled look. I guess you could say the acorns we found weren’t acorns at all, but rather bunny poop that had thawed. Wasn’t our proudest moment haha:)

Liam had a gift for being there for others. If you needed anyone to rant to or just to hear you out, he was the one. Whether you knew him or just met him he always had an ear to listen. He truly made the world a better and brighter place. I’ll forever be grateful for the light he shared and the memories I have with and of him. His presence was a reminder of how one person’s heart can have such a profound impact. Liam will never be forgotten by all who knew him. <3

I vividly remember the first time I met Liam. It was the first day of school in Grade 7, and as I walked towards my desk, I noticed a kid sitting behind me. It was Liam, and I remember thinking how cute he was. He was adorable, and I felt so lucky that a cute new kid was in my class! A few weeks later we were sat at a table together with another classmate. She ended up missing some school, which left just Liam and I at the table together. We had to share a textbook, and I remember how fast our friendship formed over those weeks. We both ended up developing crushes on each other, even to the point of Liam asking me to the Halloween dance!

I remember the day he asked me, as I could hear the whispers in the hall that he was going to. But by the end of the day he hadn’t asked, so I figured it wasn’t happening. I was standing at my locker when the next thing I know a big bag of Sour Patch Kids is being slid down the hall towards me! I picked it up and it had a beautiful handwritten note asking “Will you go to the dance with me?” I looked down the hall and saw Liam running towards the exit. He left without saying anything, which is so cute and it’s so sweet how nervous he was. Of course I said yes to him (even though my parents didn’t want me to— sorry mom and dad!). He even dressed up as a mime to match with me at the Halloween dance! Our crushes on each other lasted a short time, but our friendship stayed strong throughout school. He remained one of my closest guy friends, and we had many great moments together. He had the best humour and laugh, yet underneath his big personality was a caring and thoughtful person. I will always cherish these memories we shared, and am thankful to have known such an amazing person.

I kind of forgot until recently how me and Liam became friends. He came out of nowhere halfway through my grade 6 school year. I didn’t really have any close friends at the time because I was actually new to the school as well, arriving halfway through the previous semester. We got along instantly for a short amount of time before he disappeared. And then when it came time to pick roommates for the famous Grade 6 Camp Chief Hector Retreat, Liam still wasn’t around. Not knowing if he’d even be back—or if he’d pick me—I ended up writing down the name of a random kid, someone I kind of knew but wasn’t close to.

Some time passed, and Liam showed up again. He asked me who I picked as a roommate, and when I told him it wasn’t him, he told me that he had picked me. I remember being surprised that he remembered me—and even more surprised that he picked me. It might seem insignificant, but it’s difficult to explain how much that meant to me, as one of maybe three Black kids in that school, I rarely felt chosen by any. And yet, Liam did, someone I had talked to for a couple days at most.

We stayed friends but didn’t become really close until grade 9. After about 3 years I was pleasantly surprised to see that he was was still the same easy going, ridiculously nice kid who could make friends with anyone and somehow manage to introduce you to half the school without even trying.
Some of the friends Liam and I made together, along with the people he introduced me to, have become my longest-lasting friendships.

I can confidently say that Liam changed my life for the better. And I’ll always be grateful for the kind of person he was and his long lasting addition to my life.

Liam,

Its crazy to think its been five long years since you've been here. So much has changed since you've been gone, I can't imagine your reactions to all that has occurred. I would give so much to talk to you about it, to hear my friend again, to see who you would of become.

You've always had a way of bringing people together and here you are again still creating communities.

I would watch those ads about mental health or read the statistics, and before I would never think twice about it. I would never have those conversations or truly check in to others, but you have opened my eyes. I wish it didn't take something so tragic and someone so close to see how crucial our mental health is. You, l'm sure, have opened many eyes and have started many conversations over the last few years.

It's incredible to see how loved and respected you are. I'm glad you're still impacting the world to this day in the same way you did before, positively.

I miss you Liam.

Liam didn’t need much time to leave an undeniable mark on my life. He embodied a rare kind of kindness, wit and presence that made you feel like you mattered just by being around him. His personality seeped through in everything he did. His laughter was contagious and his smile had an uncanny ability to fade even the deepest sadness. When he passed, it was so surreal, I was sure he had been mistaken for someone else. It took the world losing him for me to realize our similarities.

For years, I had been suppressing my own struggles, hiding them behind humor and a busy social life, much like Liam did. I constantly judged myself for harbouring suicidal thoughts, feeling guilt and embarrassment. But after his death, something shifted in me. In the most heartbreaking way, Liam was able to change every preconceived notion I had about what depression looked like. I was forced to reconsider the shame I felt in feeling this way. It was as if his passing gave me permission to feel without judgment, to stop holding myself to some impossible standard. His loss made me realize that struggling wasn’t a flaw, and shouldn’t be stigmatized. It is something we all go through, in different ways, and at different times.

It is inexpressible the ways in which Liam’s presence helped me, simply by being the person he was. Years later and he continues to help me, reminding me that even in my darkest moments, there are people who care. I have come to realize how connected we all are, and how, despite the overwhelming tunnel vision that makes you feel like there is only one solution, there is always a chance for healing.

As cliche as it sounds, if I could have one more minute with Liam, I would thank him for making me the person I am today. I would tell him how loved he is, and how he has profoundly impacted the people around him, regardless of how long we knew him.

Liam was like a ray of sunshine everywhere he went. He found ways to bring a smile to everyone’s face no matter where he was.

He taught me how to be comfortable in my own skin and provided the safest space for me to be myself. The lessons I’ve learned from him were some of the most critical to my growth as an individual, and that perfectly describes the kind of person he was.

He found ways to touch souls and impact them in life altering ways just through his energy.

He will never be forgotten by me or my family, and has a corner reserved in my heart and mind for the rest of my life.

The first time I met Liam I was sitting at a park bench by myself and he came over to me and asked me if I wanted to join him and his friends to play. That pretty much sums up the kind of person Liam was. He was always kind, caring, a light that lit up every room he walked into. He always made sure that everyone felt included and had the biggest smile on his face.

Words will never describe how much he’s done for me especially with how much he’s changed my perspective on life. He taught me to care about everyone, enjoy the small moments in life and never take them for granted, but most importantly he taught me how to look at the really crappy things in life in a positive way.

Liam was such a beautiful person, and it’s so difficult to put into words how much he impacted my life. I first met him in grade 10 science class, and right away, I was drawn to his bright smile and infectious personality. Whether we were goofing around or helping each other with assignments, we became fast friends.

Liam had a unique way of making me laugh, even on the tough days. He always put others first, which is something I admired deeply. His kindness and generosity were only matched by his handsome appearance and that smile that could light up any room.

Liam will always hold a special place in my heart, I’ll always cherish our friendship.

It’s hard to write one single memory or thing about such a special person.

Despite only spending time with Liam for a couple of months one summer, he made every time memorable. He was kind, humorous, and always made me smile.

It is heartwarming to see how his memory has carried on and how we continue to remember him.

I am grateful to have known him and to be able to share a little part of what he was like.

Growing up, Liam was more than just a boy who lived across the street, my sister’s best friend or my favourite babysitter’s little brother. He was the only friend of my sister’s who wouldn’t call me annoying and tell me to leave, but rather include me.

I’ll never forget the day he taught me how to blow bubble gum. His patience while encouraging me to keep trying even when I wanted to give up was mesmerizing. That small memory has stuck with me, not just because it was fun, but because it showed the kind of person he was; kind, encouraging, and always there to help someone out.

Liam helped open my eyes to how little we sometimes know about what others are going through, even if they seem happy and full of life. His loss taught me to be more mindful, kinder, and to always check in on people I care about.

Liam was honestly one of the most upbeat individuals I have ever met who always matched my energy. You could always go to him for a laugh or just someone to listen when you needed.

I first got to know Liam through the eyes of his mother. I met her at a conference and we became instant friends. As I got to know her more and more, she would talk about her life and her eyes would light up when she’d talk about Liam. I always got this warm feeling when she talked about him, like this sense of “I’m so glad they have each other.”

When I met Liam, I was struck by how mature he was and how much of an old soul he seemed to be. He would always say thoughtful things to me; even something as seemingly simple as “how are you doing this evening?" paired with that genuine smile and direct eye contact, was so strikingly warm and not what I would typically have expected from a young teenage boy!

I will always remember Liam at his nephew’s first birthday party. He was so delighted as he experienced his nephew experiencing the joy and wonder of a first birthday party. He was smiling and laughing and taking it all in.

I knew Liam for a short time, but he left a lasting impression on me. I think of him often and I honour his sweet and gentle soul.

Whenever I think of Liam, it brings me an instant smile.

It's what he was best at - making you laugh, making you smile.

Liam was a joyful, kind and fun-loving person to everyone. He was sensitive, selfless and cared deeply about others. It's what made him so special.  It's also why losing him was so heartbreaking. I've wished so many times that we could've helped carry his burdens the way he carried all of us. I think back to our childhood. I'm a bit of an introvert and youth is just awkward for everyone. But, you always felt you could be your truest, weirdest self when you were around Liam. Even though we were all just kids,  it was his nature to make you feel happy. He seemed to have it all - humour, confidence, charm - and the coolest hairstyle. One of my favourite memories is him often fixing my fly-away bangs, sweeping them out of my eyes in a helpful way to keep my style in check. I love that LOWKURE is carrying forward his legacy with a beautiful, stylish brand. It means a lot for his natural joy and charisma to continue to be shared, and a reminder to stay connected and care about community.

One of my favorite memories with Liam is from our Grade 10 Spanish class.

Our teacher was incredibly strict, but we always found a way to make it fun by passing silly notes to each other.

Sometimes we’d help each other out with the classwork, but most of the time, we just tried to make each other laugh. Those moments weren’t just about getting through a tough class, they brought us so much closer and created a bond I’ll always cherish.

Liam had a way of making even the most ordinary moments enjoyable.

I’m so grateful for those memories and I feel so lucky to have known him.
